Allostock Gooseberry Show
Saturday 3rd August 2019
Crown Inn, Lower Peover
The Allostock Gooseberry Society show was held at the Crown Inn, Lower Peover on Saturday 3rd August . Members of the Allostock Society have been competing to grow the heaviest or premier berry since 1898 and this year for the first time the RHS fruit expert , Jim Arbury made the trip from Surrey to see the Allostock Show.
Competition was fierce and despite adverse weather conditions and a plague of wasps it was a successful show with cups and prizes presented to many members .
This year Jim Hart the Club secretary won again with his premier berry , Millenium, weighing in at 29 penny weights, 11 grains.
Afterwards competitors and visitors enjoyed a celebration meal at The Crown. Plans are now being made to grow even bigger and heavier berries for next year’s Show!
